In long-block of housing the ones in the middle are typically left uncovered by one service or another and that can keep your prosperity lower because they won't evolve. One mistake that people seem to make in Caesar IV is in using long streets of insulae or townhouses. Use the overlays extensively to get a quick overview of which houses are covered by which entertainment buildings, and check if all buildings are fully staffed: understaffed culture buildings will provide less coverage. Last, entertainment coverage: an arena needs a gladiator guild to perform any gladiator shows, and those gladiators need weapons, so make sure you have at least 4 loads of weapons available. You will probably not need that many people in Caralis though. For a medium-sized city (around 3000 people), a combination of 15 medium insulae, 10 medium domus, and 4 large estates will give you a prosperity rating of just over 50. You can use our prosperity calculator to calculate the expected prosperity rating for any given mix of houses. This doesn't only mean patricians: also evolve your plebs and equites to at least medium insula/domus. Then, prosperity: this is the average housing quality of all houses in your city. Those patricians will evolve their houses to the third level (out of 9) before they need exotic goods, so better wait for them to reach that level (and get some property taxes in before you start importing exotics). I advise against having a (filled) exotic market in place before getting patricians: importing exotic goods is a drain on your treasury, and setting up a patrician district can be quite costly already. If I need them for prosperity, I place a few of them in the second or third year, when I have enough food, basic and luxury goods stocked to keep them happy. Next, when to add patricians: depends on the scenario. An additional problem you might encounter with so little money in your treasury is that your equites leave because they fear you might go into debt and will not be able to pay their salaries. Focus on trading first: exporting goods is your main source of income in the first few years. Usually, 8-12 pleb houses and 3-4 equites will give you a good start. But will that do the trick? The game keeps saying I need more entertainment for these patricians. I finally decided I need an arena to satisfy these patricians, so I'm working on that. I've satisfied all the other requirements for this scenario except prosperity. Must they live across the street from every theater, arena and odeum in town? I need to achieve 50 prosperity in Caralis and I'm at 35. Whenever I add villas, the patricians are never happy enough. Now, at what point do you decide to add patricians? Should the exotic market already be in place for them? I'm pretty sure I'm not entirely efficient at setting the basic city structure, but I've gotten to the point where I have a few spare hundred denarii in the treasury after establishing the plebs and equites and all their jobs. Increasing prosperity is REALLY difficult for me. I had to play Narbo about 4 times before Caesar stopped sending his army after me. I just got the game last week and am really enjoying it, however, I don't think I'm very good at city building.
